Box Score SANTA CRUZ, CA -- UC Santa Cruz hosted their second straight home match Friday as they took on Holy Names University at West Field House. The Banana Slugs used their height advantage and held the Hawks to .182 hitting percentage as the Banana Slugs won the match 3-0.
The Banana Slugs won their last match 3-0 over UC Merced in Santa Cruz last Friday. The Hawks lost their last match last Friday 3-0 to California Baptist University in Oakland.
In the first set, the two teams played the set very evenly but the Banana Slugs won the first set 25-18. The second set was the most tightly played of all the sets as the two teams traded points back and forth but in the end it was the Banana Slugs that pulled away for the 25-19 second set and they led the match two sets to none. The third set was dominated by the Banana Slugs as the Banana Slugs cruised to a 25-14 third set win and they won the match 3-0.
For UC Santa Cruz, Lake Merchen had a match high nine kills and for Holy Names, Kyle Cazares and Blake Jansen both had seven kills. Ryan McLaughlin had a match high twenty assists for UC Santa Cruz and Chayse Nobriga-Antonio had seventeen for Holy Names. Cameron Bardeau led the Banana Slugs with a match high six digs and Nelson Fisher and Luke Motoyama both had five digs for the Hawks.
For the match, UC Santa Cruz had a .309 hitting percentage with the best percentage coming in the fourth set at .471 while Holy Names, as previously mentioned, had a .182 hitting percentage with the first set having the best percentage at .421. UC Santa Cruz had nine service aces to Holy Names' zero.
The Banana Slugs will have their next match next Friday as they take on NAIA opponent Concordia University of Irvine at West Field House. The first serve is set for 7 pm.
