NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – On a crisp sunny morning at the Lee Hall Mansion at Christopher Newport University, the men's and women's cross country teams stormed to their fourth-consecutive Coast to Coast Cross Country Championship Titles. Both programs earned dominant victories as the women's team featured six runners in the top 10 to score 28 points with
Helena Janku earning her second-straight individual title. The men's team scored a perfect 15 points in the Championship run, putting seven runners in the top 10 with a clean sweep of first through fifth with junior
Luke Holland earning his first individual championship. The C2C Cross Country Championship titles today serve as the fourth overall titles for both the men's and women's program with the first victory coming in 2021. The Banana Slugs will be back in action on Nov. 16 when they travel to Portland, Oregon for the NCAA Division III West Region Championship.
Women's 6k
The UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs ran to their fourth-consecutive C2C crown on Saturday morning, scoring 28 points in the victory while Salisbury turned in 45 points for second. The Slugs were led by reigning C2C cross country champion,
Helena Janku, as the junior earned her second-straight individual title with a time of 22:10.80, winning the 6k by just over three seconds.
Hanna Hekkanen was the next Banana Slug to cross the line, running a 22:46.58 to take fourth place overall.
Sara Teitelbaum took sixth in the 6k, running a 23:02.28.
Jordan Robinson and
Jordan Baden rounded out the top five for UCSC with Robinson crossing in 23:30.42 while Baden followed closely behind in 23:32.03 with the duo taking eighth and ninth.
Ryanne Reynolds finished in 10th overall with a time of 23:36.93 with
Cheryl Chuang rounding out the top seven finishers for UCSC with a time of 23:52.24.
Faith Dyogi,
Madison Lorenz, and
Frieda Cedillo all turned in top 20 finishes as well with Dyogi (24:00.82) and Lorenz (24:02.10) taking 12th and 13th while Cedillo (24:20.51) took 17th to round out the Banana Slugs' performances.
Men's 8k
The UC Santa Cruz men's cross country team won their fourth straight title in the most dominant way a team can in a cross country race, sweeping the top five spots to earn a perfect score of 15 points. The Slugs were led by junior
Luke Holland who earned his first C2C individual championship title by nearly 25 seconds, crossing the line in 25:29.09 to take the crown.
Graeme Maclean was the next Banana Slug to cross the finish line, running a 25:53.98 to finish as the C2C runner-up. The trio of
Eric Anderson,
Camden Hebert, and
Benthan Vu finished nearly side by side with Anderson completing the 8k in 26:00.21 with Hebert and Vu running 26:01.44 and 26:01.89 to take third through fifth and complete the perfect 15 point score.
Casey Orton and
Ethan Vahle also turned in top 10 performances to round out the top seven for UCSC with Orton running a 26:06.76 while Vahle crossed in 26:17.69 to take eighth and 10th, respectively.
Camden Jaureguy and
Michael Lennox finished inside the top 20, crossing in 26:39.11 and 26:49.70 to take 13th and 17th while
Alex Wille took 28th in 27:33.65 to complete the day for the Banana Slugs.
