The UCSC men's cross country team started their second cross country season with seventh place finish out of 17 teams at the University of San Francisco Invitational. Featuring some of the top cross country programs on the West Coast, the men showed they belonged in a field filed with DI and DII teams and won by Pac-12 powerhouse Stanford University while the Cal men finished second overall. Colleges finding themselves looking up at the Slugs in the results included San Jose State, Saint Mary's, Cal State East Bay and Cal State Monterey Bay.
Tyler Hoyt led the men with a 22nd place showing, covering the 8K course in 26:06. Eddie Strnad followed close behind in 26:32. Jame Ruiz, Dane Kreisman and Theron Carmichael complete the Slugs scoring five.
In a field featuring 19 teams, the women placed 13 overall with Cal and Stanford swapping places but again taking the top two spots. Sophmore Evie Borchard finished 28th overall in personal best 18:51. Jamie West made a successful college debute in 19:38 with Mimi Petersen, Jennifer Contreras and Nathalie Gomez also scoring for the Slugs.
Both teams return to Golden Gate park to compete in the San Francisco State Gator Invitational on Friday September 14.
