Slugs Open Season Against Cal Poly


SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA -- The Slugs faced a tough opponent in their season opener against #64 ranked Division I Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Even though Cal Poly swept the matches winning 7-0, the Slugs put up a fight and competed extremely well. Starting the season ranked #26 in the nation in Division III, UC Santa Cruz showed a lot of potential and talent in this first match. 

At the top doubles spot, UCSC returns All-Americans Senior Taylor Mannix and Sophomore Ariana Mokhtari. They dropped their match 8-2 to Jocelyn Davis and Florence Lehane despite earning several break points. At No. 2 doubles, Jen Cornea and Gabrielle Gatewood defeated Freshman Alex Scotten and Sophomore Laura Wade 8-2 in their collegiate tennis debut. Sophomore Nicole Hannouche and Sophomore Rachel Shinto fought hard but lost their match at No. 3 doubles to Ane McPike and Kathryn Webb 8-1.

The Slugs played and competed well in singles, despite being swept in all six matches. Mannix battled at the No. 2 spot before losing 6-3, 6-2 to Lehane, and Shinto played well despite losing 6-3, 6-2 to Gatewood at No. 5 singles. Next the Slugs compete against Division I Santa Clara University at Santa Clara Jan 23rd at 2pm.
