UCSC vs. CSU San Marcos

SANTA CRUZ, CA.---Stormy skies, fog and rainy conditions descended upon the Lower East Field this past Sunday for the second game of the weekend as the Banana Slugs took on the visiting Cal State San Marcos squad up from San Diego County. The slippery conditions only promoted a more physical game than the Slugs had seen all year with several yellow cards being issued to CSUSM by the end of the match, one of which led to a PK for the Slugs which #9 Roxanne Beltran gracefully converted in the second half. The penalty kick was awarded after freshman center back #23 Toni Darragh had come up the pitch to make a run in the box for a corner kick and was shoved to the ground. The CSUSM squad got on the board first and tucked away a shot coming from a scramble in the 6 yard box in conditions of low-visibility on the field. The physical CSUSM squad would convert two more times, once on a breakaway, and another on a fumble by Lang who could not hold onto a shot she initially covered up in the rainy conditions. Sunday's game marked Senior Presentation Day where the UCSC squad honored the 6 seniors on the squad including midfielder #10 Erica Wheeler-Dubin, Goalkeeper #1 Janneke Lang, Goalkeeper #0 Elle Vermillion, outside back and midfielder #2 Greta Brandt, Center Back #4 Becky Ngoon, and forward #3 Therese Esposso. The Slugs look to regroup as they take to the road for their last two games of the 2010 season against key division III rivals CMS and Chapman whom they will play the last weekend of October.
