UCSC Edges Whitworth a Soccer Classic

SPOKANE, WA.-- Whitworth could not break through against the stifling defense of UC Santa Cruz as the visiting Banana Slugs pulled out a 1-0 win over the Pirates in the opening game of the Whitworth Soccer Classic. Whitman College defeated Capital University 1-0 in overtime of the nightcap.

Whitworth (2-1) mustered only three shots against UCSC, and only two of those forced Slug keeper Monica Chazen to make a save.

Meanwhile UCSC kept the Pirates on their heals, putting up 14 shots (seven on goal). Callie Bergstrom (So., GK, Spokane, Wash.) made six saves for the Bucs.

The Banana Slugs' goal came in the first half. Jackie Belton's corner kick slipped through the defense to the far post, where Chloe Rose hipped the ball into the net at 22:32.
