Women's Soccer's Katie Loomis, Playing Professionally in Swedent
KARLSTAD, SWEDEN--Women's soccer goalie, 2003 graduate, is currently playing professional soccer in Karlstad Sweden. Below is a blurb written by Loomis, describing her experience in Sweden.
I play for a team called QBIK, we are based out of Karlstad, Sweden. We play in the division 1 league of South Ettan. Its the league just below Damallsvenskan which is the highest in Sweden and before WPS the highest level of womens soccer (still arguable). If we place first in our league then we get bumped up to Damallsvenskan and the worst team get bumped down. The season started April 18 and ends middle of October. We have a 2 week break in July and then start right back up and go through October.
I was fortunate to get this opportunity because of people I knew. It all started by asking my San Francisco Nighthawks coach Aileen Nasypany if she knew of anyone or how to get contacts over seas. She had had a player play in Sweden and put me in contact with her. After talking a bit I was quickly given the contact of her coach in Sweden. I began emailing him, it wasn't until March he emailed me back seeing if I could come for a trial at the beginning of their season and then talk about staying thru October. Since then I have arrived, played in 2 games and am the starting keeper (knock on wood). I live with one of my teammates, before she got injured we would work on foot work and juggling during the day and practice with the team at night. We even set up our own little soccer tennis court. Oh and one of my favorite things about playing for this team is after practice they always lay out bananas, apples, bread and cheese :)
