Season Preview 2006

A record number of players tried out for this years UCSC Women's Soccer Team. The coaching staff has selected 11 new players, they will join the team's 13 returnee's to participate in preseason camp.

Fourth year Head Coach Michael Runeare feels that all of the new players are capabable of getting immediate playing time. " This group of incoming players are the strongest group of freshman to join our program. Their athleticism and technical ability will strengthen our level of play". Five Players from this group could be starters when the team plays it first game of the season on the road in Southern California. MF Jackie Belton (Bakersfield/Stockdale H.S), MF Katie Hayden (Bellingham, WA/ Sehome H.S), MF Karli Cowman (San Anselmo/Drake H.S),  Defender Callie Hajosy (San Diego/Grossmon H.S) and Defender Brittany Walden (Temecula/Temecula Valley H.S).

Local Santa Cruz High standout Forward Miranda Emmanuel is also expected to make an immediate contribution. Coach Runeare comments " I am excited that we got Miranda one of the areas top players staying in Santa Cruz. I look forward to watching her continue her aggressive and creative attacking play here at UCSC". 

Top returnees leading this young team are 3rd year Goalkeeper, Captain Katie Loomis (Tacoma, WA/Stadium H.S), 3rd year back Megan Cox (Alta Loma/Alta Loma H.S) and 2nd year forward Annick Lamb (Santa Barbara/San Marcos H.S). Co- captain along with Loomis is 4th year player Monica Lee (Piedmont/ Piedmont H.S). These players along with their teammates have worked very hard raising the level of play here at UCSC. It has been their goal to reach the NCAA playoffs. Their success in the past has not clouded their vision to become one of the top Women's Soccer program in the West.

This year's schedule includes matches against West Coast Independent rivals Chapman and Cal State East Bay.  Early games on the road against Northwest Conference Whitworth College and SCIAC Conference Pomona Pitzer will set the tone for the season. Coming to Santa Cruz are two participants of last years 2005 NCAA Championship playoffs IIAA Conference Loras College of Iowa and Independent University of Dallas.  We welcome your support at our home matches at the UCSC East Remote Field.
