Slugs Open Season with Back-To-Back Wins
Leaving the Polar Bears Out in the Cold
SANTA CRUZ, CA -- The UCSC Women's Soccer team won their second game of the season with a 3-1 victory over visiting Ohio Northern University. The Slugs netted all three of their goals in the first half, as they controlled the tempo holding the Polar Bears to just 2 shots.
Senior Caitlin Carpenter got the first goal past Ohio's Barbie Kneger 13 minutes into the game on a Lauren Lindsay assist.
Just 30 seconds later the Slugs would put together another goal off a Didi Ramirez cross. Forward Kirstin Horn dummied the ball to set up senior Lauren Philibosian with a clear shot to the back of the net. Didi Ramirez was credited with her third assist on the season.
Later in the first half, Ramirez would get her first goal of the season after she drilled one from outside the box to the left crossbars, well beyond the reach of Ohio's goalkeeper. The Slugs would take a 3-0 lead into halftime.
Ohio stepped up their defense in the second half, holding the Slugs to just 4 shots versus the 15 they got off in the first. Ohio's keeper Barbie Kneger tallied 7 saves on the night. Laura Smolinski would score the only goal for the Polar Bears with 27 minutes left in the game.
The Slugs are now 2-0 and get a day off before playing Pacific Lutheran on Sunday at 4pm.
