SANTA CRUZ, CA -- Today's game proved to be another physical game between the soccer programs of UCSC and CSU Hayward, as Hayward was battling for a win that would move them ahead of Santa Cruz in the rankings. Having been swept by Hayward last year, the Slugs were just as determined to win on their home field. And it was the play of Senior captains Skye Vendt-Pearce and Gina Ramirez secured the 5th straight victory for UCSC.
The Slugs jumped out to a quick lead, only 6 minutes into the game Hayward's goalkeeper misplayed a pass back to her which ended up right to the feet of a charging Skye Vendt-Pearce. With little time to react, Vendt-Pearce was able to kick the ball between the keepers legs and got the fans on their feet as the ball rolled past the goal line.
Vendt-Pearce's offensive prowess was far from over as she scored again in the 61st minute, beating 2 defenders in the box and putting it beyond the goalie's reach. Four minutes later, Vendt-Pearce assisted teammate and co-captain Gina for her 3rd goal on the season and 3rd and final goal of the game. After a stagnant first half, Hayward did turn on the offensive pressure in the second half, but the Slugs back line held strong and goalkeeper Katie Loomis racked up 5 saves.
With a week and a half off, the Slugs have to remain focused for their next game against DIII Independent and No. 12 ranked team in the country, Chapman University. The Slugs will face Chapman at home on Friday October 8th at 2pm.
