Jacobs Soars Over The Oaks

With five Slugs scoring in double figures, UC Santa Cruz was able to outscore Menlo College 83-73 in the home opener at the Slug Dome. Led by Brent Jacobs making 10 out of 12 shots in the paint, the men from Cruz were able to outscore the Menlo Oaks 48 to 30 in the paint to run their record to 3-5 for the season.

Early on, the Slugs and Oaks swapped baskets with Tim Tatum carrying the load for Menlo. Scoring 7 of Menlos first 10 points, Tatum would keep the Oaks hanging around until a Andrew Young jumper with 13:38 left in the first half gave Menlo its only lead of the game, 12-11. Spencer Wells answered for the Slugs with a short bank shot and Santa Cruz was off and running. That lead would stretch to 9 points on a driving Sam Allen lay up with just over 4:30 left in the first half. At half, the Slugs were ahead 34-28 including 11 points by Brent Jacobs, capped by a thunderous dunk to close out the first half scoring.

The second half started off with the Slugs opening up their lead. With 12:24 left in the game, a Trent Reeves lay up would give UCSC a 15 point lead, their largest of the game. For the next seven minutes, the Oaks rattled off 25 points to the Slugs 15, tying the game at 63 all off of an Andrew Young lay up. After trading baskets, Brent Jacobs put the Slugs ahead for good with a reverse lay up at 4:40 to go, giving Santa Cruz a 68-66 lead. A backdoor lay up by Tyler Hunt stretched the lead out to 4 points with 3:36 left. From there, it was taking care of business time as the slick ball handling of Nate Morhi opened up numerous opportunities for the Slugs. As the defense collapsed on him with just under a minute to go, Nate kicked the ball out to Tyler Hunt for a game clinching 3. Up 77-68 with 57 seconds left, the Oaks were forced to foul to stay in the game. Tyler Hunt, Sam Allen and Nate Morhi would all knock down a pair of free throws over the last 57 seconds and the Slugs came away with a victory.

Brent Jacobs had a career night, scoring 25 points from 10 for 12 from the field. He also swatted away 4 shots. Tyler Hunt recorded a double double, pulling down 10 boards to go with his 13 points. Jamien Jones had another quality game, playing solid defense while scoring a career high 14 points. Sam Allen was once again in double figures, adding 12 points to the cause including a perfect 6 for 6 from the line. Sophomore Trent Reeves added 11 points along with a career high 8 rebounds.

For the Oaks, Tim Tatum continued his excellent season, scoring 24 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Guard ChaRunn Jones (15) and Andrew Young (12) also scored double figures.
