Slugs Fall to Redlands in Semi-Finals of Lee Fulmer Memorial Tournament

In the second round of the Fulmer tournament, University of Redlands beat UC Santa Cruz 92-76 in front of an active home crowd. Redlands will play Pomona Pitzer for the tournament championship while the Slugs will face long time nemesis, Chapman in the third place game at 5:30pm. Shooting lights out early, the Slugs ran out to an 11 point lead in the first half off of a Brent Jacobs short jump shot with just over 6 minutes left in the first half. Leading 33-22, Santa Cruz would be outscored 16 to 6 over the last 6 minutes of the half to hold a slim 39-38 lead at half time. The second half started off well for Santa Cruz with Nate Mohri draining a three to stretch the lead to four before Redlands took off and scored 10 of the next 12 points to take a 4 point lead just over 2 minutes into the second half. With both sides playing tight defense, the game would stay close for the next three minutes with the Slugs taking their last lead of the game 51-50 off of another short Brent Jacobs jumper. For the rest of the game, the Bulldogs from Redlands would steadily increase their lead, shooting lights out from both the line and from the field in the second half. Redlands would hit 17 for 25 from the field for an amazing 68% from the field in addition to being 16 for 22 from the free throw line. This ultimately led to their impressive 92-76 victory. In doing so, the Bulldogs would shoot 63% from the field for the game while holding Santa Cruz to just 38%. The bigger Bulldogs would also outrebound the Slugs by 13. For Redlands, defending SCIAC champions and NCAA qualifiers in 2011, Brian Kuklok would hit 9 for 10 from the field including 3 for 4 from behind the arc to score 23 points. Teammate Stephen Call was an equally impressive 9 for 12 from the field, also scoring 23 points while Josiah Brensdal pulled down 11 rebounds. For the Slugs, senior Brent Jacobs was 8 for 12 from the field including two monster dunks and his first three-point basket of the season to score 17 points. Sam Allen also dropped in 17 including 8 for 8 from the free throw line. Sam also led the defensive charge with four steals.
