Coming off their second-best West Regional Performance ever, the UC Santa Cruz women's cross country team is ready to continue it's rise into national prominence.

The Banana Slugs will bring a young roster of 8 underclassmen into our new conference affiliation, the American Collegiate Athletic Association, contending for a conference crown for the first time in Banana Slug History on October 26, 2019. The Banana Slugs return four runners from the 2018 West Regional Team: Anya Hynell-Cooper, Elana Muzzy, Natalie Marquardt, and Amelia Huster as well as 2017 AD3I freshman of the year Carrie Bradley.

The women are bolstered by an incredible freshman class, with 8 new team members that could all make an immediate impact.

"We graduated three incredibly special student-athletes in Raissa Boysen, Sydney Gutierez, and Shannon McClish last year and knew we would need a great freshman class to stay at a competitive level," head coach David Klech said.  "This class was a joy to recruit and I think they all really embrace what it means to be a Banana Slug student-athlete. They bring in a lot of championship racing experience, which should pay immediate dividends."

The incoming freshman are:

  • Ashley Baudin was a CIF State Meet Qualifier in Cross Country as well as a North Coast Section meet of Champions finalist in the 3200m.

  • Monica Fonseca and Annette Hermlin come from nationally renowned Claremont HS in Southern California and were staples in the program.

  • Izzy Heart (Boulder, Colorado) capped her Senior XC season with a 10th place finish at the Nike Cross Regionals Southwest Regional Championships.

  • Riley Martel-Phillips joins High School teammates Kellen O'Neill and Solomon Reinman from Arcata HS where she was an eight-time Humboldt Del Norte Individual Champion.

  • Ella Ruff out of University City HS in San Diego comes as a four-time CIF State Meet Cross Country Qualifier.

  • Sage Simms (Point Loma HS) helped lead the Pointers to four Eastern League Championships in Cross Country.

  • Hana Vrablik was a two time CIF State Champion in Cross Country with Foothill Technology HS in Ventura.

The Banana Slug Women kick off their season on Saturday August 31st at the University of San Francisco Invitational in Golden Gate Park.
