Banana Slugs Play Hard Fall Twice in Day Two of Trinity Invitational

SAN ANTONIO (10-12) – UC Santa Cruz finished their trip to Texas as they took on University of Mary Hardin Baylor and Division III #11 Ohio Northern University. The Banana Slugs fell 3-1 to the Crusaders in the early match and lost 3-0 to the Polar Bears in the late match.

Match #1 – vs. Univ. of Mary Hardin Baylor

In the first set, the two teams traded points for the first twelve serves. The Crusaders would then go on an 8-4 spurt to take the lead for good at 14-10. The Banana Slugs would come as close as three  at 15-12 on a Claire Okerlund kill. The Crusaders however finished on a 10-2 run and won the first set 25-14. 

In set two, the Banana Slugs jumped out to a 3-0 lead and gained their largest lead of the set at 17-12, on an attack error by the Crusaders. From that point, the Crusaders would go on a 7-0 run to give the Crusaders their largest lead of the set at two at 19-17. The Banana Slugs would then score seven of the next eight points to take the lead back at 24-20 before winning the second set 25-22 and tied the match at 1-1.

In the third set, the teams would trade points, and the lead, for the first twelve serves. The Crusaders would then go on a 14-0 run however, to take the lead for good at 20-6, winning the set 25-12. In the fourth set, the Banana Slugs started on a 9-3 run capped by a Maiya Sears kill. The Crusaders answered with a 5-0 run to trim the Banana Slugs lead to one. The Banana Slugs expanded their lead to four, at 19-15, on Shania Andrews's service ace. With UCSC at set point at 24-21, the Crusaders worked their way back and tied the set at 24-24. After the Banana Slugs regained the lead at 25-24 on a Sears kill, the Crusaders scored the set's final three points to win 27-25 and the match 3-1. Okerlund led the Banana Slugs with twelve kills, while Sears had ten.

Match #2 vs. #11 Ohio Northern.

In the first set, the Banana Slugs would start the set on an 8-4 spurt capped by a solo block by Alexandria Everett. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the set at 12-7, on Okerlund's kill. The Polar Bears would then go on a 15-7 run to take the lead for good at 22-19 and won the first set 25-22.

In the second set, the Polar Bears started the set on a 10-3 run, capped by a service ace. The Polar Bears would gain a double-digit lead, at 15-5, before winning the second set 25-8 and extending their match lead to 2-0. In the third set, the Polar Bears would start the set outscoring UCSC 13-9. The Banana Slugs would come as close at 15-14, on an attack error by the Polar Bears. The Polar Bears went on a 10-4 run to take the third set 25-18 and won the match 3-0.

Sears and Okerlund each had eleven kills. Okerlund added 13 digs and made the All Tournament team. Everett finished with 3 solo blocks The Banana Slugs return home for their next match on Wednesday as they take on Menlo College at West Field House at 7 pm.
