Banana Slugs split on first day in Texas

SAN ANTONIO - UC Santa Cruz opened up their Texas trip at the Trinity Invite, going 1-1 against Trinity University (0-3), and Rowan University (3-1). 

The Slugs lost a tough first match of the tournament against the host team, Trinity University, (14-25, 20-25, 13-25). After the long travels to the Lone Star State, UC Santa Cruz had a tough time getting into the match. The first set went by fast, as the Tigers took a 7-point lead, at 14-21, and not allow the Slugs another point. But UC Santa Cruz battled in the second set after being down by 7 again at 8-15, and came within one at 19-20. However the set was completed with 2 kills and a block by Trinity to win 20-25.  Trinity finished off the third set, overwhelming the Slugs and winning 13-25.

Maiya Sears, Maddie Fowler, and Claire Okerlund all contributed 7 kills, and Sinead Beaupain had 13 assists. Timolin Kepon had 14 digs for the Slugs. 

UC Santa Cruz took their first match to heart when they set out on their second match of the day against Rowan University. The Slugs defeated the Profs 3-1 (26-24, 25-18, 20-25, 25-18). UC Santa Cruz and Rowan competed on even terms through the first set, the Profs were not giving the Slugs anything easy. With the game tied 24-24, the Slugs finished the set with a kill by Alexandria Everett and another by Sears. The Slugs were on a roll the second set, taking it 25-18. By the third set, Rowan desperately wanted a win, challenging the Slugs and ultimately taking the set. UC Santa Cruz remembered how sweet victory tasted, dominating the fourth set 25-18 to finish their first day in San Antonio. 

Okerlund took to the leaderboard with a season-high 20 kills plus a team-high 14 digs. Alana Subsilla and Beaupain put up 25 and 21 assists respectively. Everett had 4 total blocks, with Fowler addiing 3 blocks. The Slugs hit .303 in the match

The Slugs, now 10-10, will continue their Texas trip with two games tomorrow: 8am against Mary-Hardin Baylor, and against No. 11 Ohio Northern at 12:30pm. Tune in to support Women's Volleyball!
