GLENSIDE (9-21) – UC Santa Cruz wrapped up their trip to Pennsylvania defeating Haverford College 3-2 in the early match and beat the Hunter College Hawks 3-1.
Match #1 – vs. Haverford
In the first set, the Fords would go on an 11-1 run to take the lead for good at 20-10. The Fords won the first set 25-15. In the second set, the two teams would trade points over the first twenty-four serves. The Fords would go on a 4-0 spurt to take a 16-12 lead. From that point, the Banana Slugs went on a 7-2 run, capped by a Claire Okerlund kill, to take the lead for good at 19-18. The Fords would tie the set at 22-22, but the Banana Slugs scored the final three points of the set to win 25-22 and tie the match. In the third set, the Banana Slugs would start the set outscoring the Fords 6-3. From that point, the Fords would on a 10-3 run to take the lead for good at 13-9. The Banana Slugs would come close at 14-12 on an Okerlund kill before Haverford won the third set 25-16. In the fourth set, the Fords would start the set on a 14-8 run before UCSC went on a 12-6 run to tie the set at 20-20. After the Fords gained a two-point lead at 23-21, the Banana Slugs scored the final four points of the set to win the fourth set 25-23 and tie the match again. In the final set, the Fords would gain their largest lead of the set at 8-6 on a Lindsey Keener kill. The Banana Slugs answered with a 5-0 spurt to take the lead at 11-8. The Banana Slugs won the fifth set 15-13 and the match.
Match #2 vs. Hunter
In the first set, the Banana Slugs started the set on a 10-2 run capped by a service ace by Cassie Nickel. The Banana Slugs would gain a double digit lead, at 18-8, on a Timolin Kepon kill,and win the first set 25-13. In the second set, the Banana Slugs outscored the Hawks 11-7 to start the set. The Hawks would then go on a 9-3 run to take their largest lead in the set at 16-14. The Banana Slugs worked their way back into the set and would take the lead for good at 18-17 on Alexandria Everett's kill before winning the second set at 25-20 and lead the match 2-0. In the third set, the teams traded points for the first sixteen serves. The Hawks would then go on a 10-7 spurt to take the lead for good at 18-15 and win the third set 25-19. In the fourth set, the Banana Slugs began on a 10-6 spurt and would never relinquish the lead, gaining their largest lead of the set at eleven, at 24-13, on a Sears kill. The Banana Slugs won the fourth set 25-15 and won the match 3-1.
Okerlund led the Banana Slugs with thirteen kills. Susbilla had 25 assists and Nickel had team-highs of 3 aces and 27 digs.
The Banana Slugs will return home for their next matches; September 27th against Gabilan College at the West Field House and October 2nd as they take on Mills College at Kaiser Permanente Arena.
