Banana Slugs Drop Two Close ones on Day One of Pennsylvania Trip

    GLENSIDE, PA (9-7) – UC Santa Cruz started their trip to Pennsylvania as they participated in the Knight Invitational hosted by Arcadia University. The Banana Slugs dropped the early match 3-2 to Salisbury University and lost 3-1 to the host Knights in the late match.
     
    Match #1 – vs. Salisbury
    In the first set, the two teams would trade points, and the lead, over the first thirty serves. The Sea Gulls would take the lead for good, at 16-15, on a service error by the Banana Slugs. The Sea Gulls would gain their largest lead of the set at 24-19 and won the first set 25-21 . In the second set, the Sea Gulls started the set outscoring the Banana Slugs 4-0. The Banana Slugs would come as close as one on three occasions; the third occasion at 7-6 on a Maddie Fowler kill. The Sea Gulls won the second set 25-16 and took a 2-0 lead in the match. In the third set, the Banana Slugs would start the set on a 10-6 spurt capped by an assisted block by Jordan Kirschner and Maiya Sears. The Banana Slugs never relinquished their lead and would gain their largest lead of the set at seven; the second occasion at 22-15 on a service ace by Timolin Kepon. The Banana Slugs won the third set 25-22. In the fourth set, the two teams traded points over the first sixteen serves. The Banana Slugs would then go on an 8-1 run, capped by a Claire Okerlund kill, to take the lead for good at 16-9 to win the fourth set 25-17 and tie the match at 2-2. In the fifth set, the two teams traded points over the first six serves. From that point, the Sea Gulls would go on a 6-0 run, capped by Jenna Feinauer's kill, to take the lead for good at 9-3. The Banana Slugs would come as close as one on two occasions; the second occasion at 11-10 on an assisted block by Isabella Hoglund and Holly Teisher. The Sea Gulls won the fifth set 15-11 and won the match 3-2. Okerlund led the Banana Slugs with seventeen kills to go over 600 career kills.
     
     
    Match #2 vs. Arcadia
    In the first set, the Banana Slugs had fourteen kills and won the first set 25-22. In the second set, the Knights would commit two fewer errors and would win
    a close set 25-20 and tied the match at 1-1. In the third set, the Knights would not commit an error during the
    course of the set, hitting .410 to win the set 25-14 and take a 2-1 lead. In the fourth set, the
    Knights would have seven more kills than UCSC (15-8) and won 25-18 and the match 3-1.
    Okerlund led the Banana Slugs with fourteen kills and thirteen digs. Sears added 10 kills while hitting .400 and Alexandria Everett had five total blocks. 
     
    The Banana Slugs will finish their trip to Pennsylvania as they will take on Haverford College at 10 am and Hunter College at noon.
