EAGLE ROCK - UC Santa Cruz swept Occidental Sunday 3-0 (25-22, 25-11, 25-16), and now head back to Santa Cruz after recording 2 wins and 3 losses this past weekend.
After facing two tough losses Saturday, the Banana Slugs dug deep during their final match of the road trip to come out on top.
At first, it seemed as though the Tigers were controlling the first set, with a 17-22 advantage. The Slugs would not back down. They tied the game at 22-22 on a block by Grace Pessagno and Maiya Sears. UC Santa Cruz finished strong, winning three points in a row to complete the comeback: 2 kills by Sears, along with the winning kill by Claire Okerlund, all assisted by freshman Sinead Beaupin.
The Slugs went on to claim the match in the next two sets, winning the second 25-11, and securing their victory in the third, 25-16.
Multiple players contributed to the team's success, and Beaupin had 24 assists and surpassed 300 assists on the season today. Cassie Nickel recorded a game-high 15 digs. Okerlund led with 11 kills and Isabella Hoglund was right behind her with 8 kills.
The Slugs (6-7) are on the road again this Friday (September 20) to compete in the Arcadia Classic in Pennsylvania.
