UC Santa Cruz Women's Tennis team finished their Fall season this weekend by hosting their Fall Invitational.
The highlight was junior Kayla Manz going undefeated in Singles to win the 16-player "B" bracket.
She defeated Carolina Groff Hinojosa of Cal Lutheran in straight sets.
"It was a super fun weekend. I love the tough competition," said Manz.
"I'm really glad I came out on top and can't wait for the season to start."
Manz was the third Banana Slug that Groff faced in singles play. She got past Isabelle Brown in the first Round and then Vivian Lee (who upset 4-seed Michelle Li of Dominican) in the quarters.
Manz had to defeat teammate Savana McDowell in the semifinals before advancing. McDowell opened the tournament beating Holy Names's Sarah Kellogg in straight sets.
Overall UCSC was 9-5 in B bracket singles matches over the weekend.
Manz then teamed with Ines Pelvang to win the B Bracket Doubles-Tournament. The pair beat CLU's Brennan Foreman and JoAnn Taylor 8-4 in the final.
"I'm so excited to have started the year strong on the doubles court with Kayla," said Pelvang. "I am proud of the whole team for putting up such a solid fight-true Slug Spirit!"
Fresno Pacific duo Ioanna Lathouri and Lea Falentin faced off against each other in the A singles final, with Lathouri winning in two very close sets. They then teamed up to win the A flight Doubles against another Fresno Pacific duo of Sanne Brull and Alice Di Matteo.
Overall, players from four Division II schools competed (FPU, Holy Names, Dominican and Stanislaus State) against the Slugs, Cal Lu and Mills College of Division III.
