VENTURA, CA - UCSC had an up-and-down start to the 2019 Ojai Tournament's Women's Singles bracket, but five of the seven athletes won at least one game as the Tournament got started.
Ashley Isaac was seeded eighth and got past Heidi Levanen of Cal Lutheran 6-1,6-4. However she fell to another CLU player Nicole Alvarez in a wild one in the Round of 16 at the Pierpont Racquet Club. Isaac won the first set 6-0 before dropping the last two 6-4, 6-0.
It was the second straight three-set thriller by Alvarez over a Banana Slug Thursday, as she earlier survived Kayla Manz 6-1; 4-6; 6-2.
After losing their opening round games, Isabelle Brown, Manz, Vivian Lee and Sabrina Lieu all advanced in the consolation bracket. Brown beat Robin Pashek of Willamette in an exciting 7-6, 6-3 match. Manz defeated Levanen 6-0, 6-1, and Lee had the longest match of the day before surviving Amanda Rodriguez of Whittier 3-6, 6-0, 11-9. Lieu easily took care of Occidental's Jane Wright 6-0, 6-0.
On Friday, Lieu and her teammate Brown will face off while Manz will take on Occidental's Andrea Clawson in the Consolation quarterfinals. The teams of Lee-Savana McDowell, Brown-Isaac, Lieu-Therese Recidoro, and Manz-Ines Pelvang will compete in the doubles Round of 16.
