VENTURA, CA - UC Santa Cruz took seven freshman to the prestigious Ojai Tournament and all seven made the quarterfinals against the best Division III collegians in the West.

"We walked on court ready to compete in every match and its was really rewarding for the Slugs to see just how far they have come," said head coach Amy Jensen. "It was amazing to head back down south and compete against some of the teams we saw in the beginning on the year."

In the singles quarterfinals on Friday, Ashley Isaac was forced to retire with an injury after being up 3-1 in the second set against Anna Schneemann of Southwestern.

Isaac swept Kindall Yeung of Whittier on Thursday's round of 16 to make the quarters. Lauren Sandifer, Kayla Manz and Savannah Hammick each won their first round matches.

Three teams of freshmen (Sandifer-Manz, Hammick-Savana McDowell and Isabelle Brown-Therese Recidoro) all made the doubles quarterfinals after winning their first round matches.

"I am really proud of these 7 freshman who played in Ojai, and also our Slugs back home. We have a great foundation from which to launch into next season - we are already excited for the 'Savage Sophomores' to emerge in 2019."
