On a day to honor seniors, it was a freshman who made the game-winning shot.

Sophia Makarem knocked in Izel Gutierrez's perfect pass in the 76th minute as UC Santa Cruz defeated a resilient St. Katherine 1-0 on a gorgeous Saturday in Santa Cruz.

It was Makarem's first career goal and put UC Santa Cruz (10-3-2) at the 10-win mark for the first time since 2012.

Before the game, UC Santa Cruz honored their six graduating seniors- Nicole Aceves, Peyton Bell, Carly Cooper, Tomiko Hoshijima, Natalie Filippi, and Amelia Streiffer.

Makarem also had UCSC's best opportunity in the first half. In the 17th minute she got a steal and shot from the top of the box. However, Firebird goalie Victoria Cavazos reacted after initially going the wrong way to stretch out and get a fingertip on the shot, pushing it wide left for a corner kick.

The Slugs dominated possession but couldn't find a way through the Firebird defense until the last 20 minutes. UCSC enjoyed a 32-1 shot advantage and a 10-0 corner kick advantage in the game.

Alyssa Diaz-Tucker had a save on St. Katherine's only shot to secure her ninth shutout of the season.

The Banana Slugs close the regular season on Tuesday the 29th when they face UC Merced in a Pediatric Cancer fundraiser.
