The Banana Slugs improved to 6-1-2 with their eigth straight game without a loss. It was their second-straight shutout of a Division II school.
UCSC capitalized early when Hernandez was brought down in the box and then sent the goalie the wrong way on the penalty to make it 1-0 21:36 into the game.
UCSC made it 2-0 twelve minutes later when Gutierrez got on the end of a Grattet pass. Four and a half minutes after that, Grattet got one of her own when she took a pass from Hernandez and shot a rocket from outside the box into the upper part of the net to put the Banana Slugs up 3-0.
With under five until halftime, Holy Names had a chance to get back in the game, but the Hawks sent their penalty shot off the crossbar and couldn't get the rebound. UCSC had a last-second attempt by Grattet go high as the half ended.
UCSC kept the pressure up in the second half and never let the Hawks back in the game. The Banana Slugs closed scoring in the 69th minute with Gutierrez blasting a 25-yarder to the upper part of the net.
Overall, UCSC outshot the Hawks 21-4, including an 11-0 edge in the second half.
The Banana Slugs next play host to NorCal rivals Mills on Tuesday October 1.
