SAN RAFAEL - UC Santa Cruz finished with a dramatic goalless draw at Division II Dominican on Tuesday afternoon.
UCSC goes to 5-1-2 and ran their unbeaten streak to seven games. Dominican went to 2-1-3.
"This team consistently fights to play to their standard," said head coach Lauren Nadler afterwards. "Although we didn't get the result that we wanted, we stayed true to our style of play. This group continues to never settle and always strives for more."
The game almost finished with a flurry. Dominican's Annika Cerini had an 87th-minute shot that was saved by Alyssa Diaz-Tucker. UCSC raced down the field and drew a free kick after a hard foul by Dominican's Kaitlyn Haub that resulted in a yellow card. Izel Gutierrez almost kept UCSC's late winning magic going but her magnificent 88th-minute free kick hit the crossbar. After another foul, Gutierrez had another chance but her shot was pushed wide. UCSC's couldn't convert the last-minute corner kick so the game went to overtime.
Diaz-Tucker finished with four saves on the day. The Slugs had a 12-6 shot advantage and had six corners to Dominican's three. UC Santa Cruz opens a three-game homestand on Friday when they play another Division II school Holy Names at 3pm.
