Late goal not enough in 2-1 loss to Hawai'i Pacific

Joelle Steichen's second half goal broke UC Santa Cruz's scoreless drought but another goal couldn't come in a loss to Hawai'i Pacific at the Lower East Field.

UCSC (3-8) dropped their second-straight game to a Division II opponent, while the Sharks improved to 2-3-3.

The Sharks began the game on with the better possession and got the first opportunity of the game 2 minutes in. However, HPU forward Josephine Von der Burg put the shot over the cross bar.

Von der Burg didn't miss the next free kick 19 minutes late, curling a left footer into the top of the net for a 1-0 lead. HPU doubled their advantage in the 42nd minute to have a 2-0 lead at the half.

The Banana Slugs started controlling possession more in the second half, and in the 51st minute Peyton Bell got a head on Abby Schmalz's corner but sent the ball high.

After a back-and-forth game, Steichen got UCSC on the scoreboard when she collected a pass from the left from Gaby Powell, one touched it past the Sharks goalkeeper, and let a left-footed dribbler that bounded to the net for her first goal of the year.

The Sharks almost restored their two-goal lead 3:28 later on a corner kick, but Noelle Mercado's shot was saved off the line by Carly Cooper before HPU put the rebound shot wide.

UCSC has one more game this week against Division II competition when they travel to Turlock on Saturday to face Stanislaus State.
