SEASIDE - For the fourth game in a row, UC Santa Cruz was able to hold a Division II team scoreless at halftime.
But for the third time in those four games, a second half goal got through to decide the game.
This time, a 47th-minute free kick was the deciding goal as Cal State Monterey Bay defeated the Slugs 1-0 Sunday afternoon.
UCSC fell to 3-12-1 while CSUMB went to 5-6-3 after holding off the Slugs by a single goal for the second-straight year.
The first half was even-played with both sides keeping possession and only getting two shots each. The game turned two minutes after halftime however, when UCSC gave up a foul outside the box. The Otters' Miranda Rudolph took the kick, put it over the wall and into the right side of the net for what would be the game's only goal.
The Slugs almost tied it at the death when Julianne Hoeflich stole a pass when the Otters tried to kill off the game. However her attempt was thwarted by CSUMB's defense before she got off a shot at the buzzer.
CSUMB outshot the visitors 13-3, with a 10-1 advantage in the second half. Malia Starita finished with five saves for the Banana Slugs.
UCSC has a week off before their next game when they visit rival Mills College on Monday the 23rd.
