Mendoza places fifth at CA Intercollegiate; Slugs finish fifth as team

VENTURA - Freshman Gillian Mendoza had two rounds of 73 to finish fifth at the CA State Intercollegiate at Olivas Links.

Mendoza finished with seven birdies over the 36 holes for a 146 (2-over), four strokes behind the medalist Hannah Jugar of Redlands who shot a 142. Redlands also took home the team title with a combined 590. The Bulldogs came from behind to edge George Fox and Pomona-Pitzer by two strokes.

Claire Oetinger shot a 12-over 156(79-77) to finish tied for 23rd. Fellow sophomore Sarah Donovan finished 31st in her UCSC debut, dropping 12 strokes off her first round score to finish with an 18-over 162. 

Mara Anunciacion (19-over 163, tied 34th) and Riley Birch (25-over-169, tied 39th) rounded out the UCSC contingent.

UCSC as a team took eight strokes off their first round score finishing with a two-day score of 624 (316-308), their best placing and score in their last four trips to the CA Intercollegiate.

The Banana Slugs won't wait long to face Redlands again as they stay in Southern California to participate in the Redlands Fall Invitational at Rancho Mirage this weekend.
