Kara Newman-Ferdolage was hired as an assistant coach at UC Santa Cruz in Fall 2019. For five seasons (2005-2010) she was the Head Women’s Basketball Coach at College of the Redwoods in Eureka after serving as an assistant there for one year. Prior to CR, she was a Graduate Assistant Coach at Humboldt State University 2002-2004. While at Humboldt, she earned her Master of Science in Kinesiology, Emphasis Teaching and Coaching
Taking a break from coaching, she has worked in City Government the past nine years, first as the Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Blue Lake, next as Administrative Assistant/Deputy City Clerk to the City Manager for the City of Arcata, and most recently as Facility Coordinator for the Monterey Sports Center (2018).
She played collegiately at Division I Northern Arizona, where in 1997-98 she led the team to the Big Sky Conference Championship, a school-record for wins as point guard and was named Team Best Defensive Player. She got her first taste of coaching there serving as Team manager in 1999-2000 as she finished her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. Prior to NAU, she played at Ventura College where the team was Back-to-Back State Champions in 1995 and 1996 with a 71-1 record. She was named Ventura College Female Athlete of the Year, Team MVP and California State Player of the Year in 1996.
She lives with wife Traci Ferdolage in Santa Cruz. Hobbies include travel, cooking, spending time at the beach, spending time with family, and spending time with her dogs.
