Women's basketball falls to Whittier to close weekend

In their season opener, Whitter College used a 29-9 third quarter to pull away in the second half and hand UC Santa Cruz a 83-63 home loss.

UCSC falls to 1-1 on the season after splitting their weekend homestand.

After a game that featured nine ties in the first 22 minutes, Whittier shot 10-15 from the field for the quarter to get to a double-digit lead they held the rest of the day. UCSC shot just 3-19 in the third quarter.

Kaylee Murphy finished with a double-double of 20 points and 14 rebounds for UC Santa Cruz. She also added a team-high 3 steals. Savannah Henson added 11 points and Ashley Kowack had 12.

CJ Catina had 2 assists to pass Leah Parrish for tenth on the school career chart.

Cali Cubel led all scorers with 28 points for the Poets to go with five assists. Teani White added 19 points plus five steals.

The Banana Slugs have road trips the next two weekends, starting next Friday in Oregon when they face Willamette.
