SAN MARCOS, CA- UC Santa Cruz grabbed 27 steals and had four players in double-figures in rolling to a 93-35 victory over a shorthanded University of St. Katherine team.
Showing no effects from their 18-day layoff, the Banana Slugs (8-8) shot 40% from the field (36-90) and never trailed in scoring their season-high point total while collecting the most steals by a UCSC team in over 20 years.
The 27 steals were the third-most in school history and UCSC's 64 rebounds tied a school record.
The Banana Slugs started the game slowly but ran out to a 22-11 lead after the first quarter. The floodgates opened in the second quarter, where UCSC outscored the hosts 25-4 and forced eight steals to be up 47-15 at the break.
Kaylee Murphy led UCSC with 20 points and nine rebounds. She also led the team with season-highs of five assists and six steals.
Keondra Smith scored 17 to lead the Firebirds (1-20), who only had two players on the bench in relief.
The Banana Slugs return home to face Bethesda University on Sunday afternoon.
