Banana Slugs sweep Thanksgiving Classic with 65-60 win over Carleton

UC Santa Cruz overcame a five-point deficit in the last quarter to beat Carleton College 65-60 in the last day of the 2018 Thanksgiving Classic.

UCSC improved to 3-2 with the win over the Knights of the MIAC, who fell to 2-3.

Freshman Ashley Kowack led UCSC with 27 points on 10-19 shooting and was named Classic MVP.

"Her teammates did a great job of finding her in rhythm for shots," said head coach Todd Kent. "Excited to watch this team grow this season."

Savannah Henson had 11 points and CJ Catina also was named to the All-Tournament team, finishing with 9 points, 3 assists and 2 steals.

UCSC led by 8 at halftime but had little answers for the Knights' Annabella Jensen inside. The Knights led by as much as five thanks to a 22-9 scoring edge in the third quarter to enter the last ten minutes leading 52-47.

Kowack however scored 10 of her 27 in the last quarter, and the Slugs took the lead for good after an 11-2 run capped by Katherine Mauldin's steal and Kowack's layup to make it 60-56 with just over 3:00 to play.

Jensen led the Knights with 16 points and 13 rebounds.

UCSC next plays on Sunday when they welcome Pacific Union to town for a 4:00pm game.
