CLAREMONT, CA -- Game 2 against the Athenas in the David Wells Classic  was a different matter then the game agsint the Sagehens.  Poor shooting and foul trouble resulted in a 63-47 loss for the Slugs.  The Slugs shot 1 for 20 from 3 point range and committed 29 fouls which the Athenas turned into 30 points.

The Slugs started off quickly.  Back to back baskets by Sarah Mackey and Free throws by Geena Giovannetti gave the slugs an early 6-4 lead at the 17 minute mark. The lead would not last long.  Over the next 14 minutes, the Slugs settled for long range jumpers that did not fall. Only the inside play by Mackey and a jumper by Giovannetti found the bottom of the net.  The Athenas made 10 free throws during a 26-9 run that gave them a 30-15 lead. The Slugs gave the fans some hope early in the second half. Two jumpers by Parrish sandwiched a layup by Mackey and the Slugs cut the lead to 35-30. The Claremont coach called a timeout which set up the key play of the game.  The Slugs came out in a trapping defense.  The Athenas looked confused but Madeline Barnes buried a long three with the shot clock running out. This basket seemed to stun the Slugs and calm the Athenas.  The Slugs never got closer than 8 points again. They pressed hard but fouled too often.  The Athenas closed the door on the Slugs by converting 14 consecutive free throws down the stretch resulting in the 63-47 final score.
