MIRAMAR, FLORIDA - Perry Winsor placed 11th in the 3000 meter steeplechase Saturday at the United States Track and Field under-20 National Championships.

"Anytime you can qualify for a National Championship it is a huge honor," said Track and Field head coach David Klech. "Perry has had an unbelievable freshman year, and to cap it off with an appearance at the National Championships is incredible. Excited to get some down time and then go after a great sophomore campaign in both Cross Country and Track & Field."

In just his third steeplechase at the college level, Winsor ran a 10:09.93 on a humid day in south Florida. Alex Slenning of the University of Washington won the title with a run of 9:04.57. Winsor is the second UCSC athlete to go to Junior Nationals in as many years, following Nick Kleiber who also competed in the Steeplechase at last year's event. The duo contributed this year to UCSC being ranked the Fifth-best Steeplechase program in Division III track.

"For UC Santa Cruz to send student-athletes to the Junior Nationals for two consecutive years shows how much the program has grown and how competitive we have become," Klech said.
