MONTEREY PARK (11-24) – The Banana Slugs took to the pool for the first time in almost a month as they participated in the Pepperdine Winter Invite held at East L.A College. The Banana Slugs' competition featured three NCAA Division II schools and one NAIA school.
In the men's competition, the Banana Slugs had participants win all but one event they participated in. Individually, Max Manwaring-Mueller had the most victories in the three-day event with four (50-yard breaststroke (27.86 seconds), 50-yard freestyle (22.01 seconds), 100-yard breaststroke (59.64 seconds) and 100-yard freestyle (47.10 seconds)). As a team, the Banana Slugs won all of their relay events. The (200-yard freestyle relay of Paul Ogle-Sporer, Victor Sowa, Alex Bailess, and Manwaring-Mueller were four seconds from the school record with a time of 1:26.79, the 200-yard medley (Akira Morita, Joe Guzman, Victor Sowa and Manwaring-Mueller), in 1:37.54 and the 400-yard medley team of Morita, Guzman, Sowa and Manwaring-Mueller in 3:36.82.
In the women's competition, the Banana Slugs had participants finish in the top ten in seventeen of the twenty-one events that took place, and in the top five in seven of those events. Individually, Elisabeth Lundgren had the best finish of the invite as she finished second in the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 28.10 seconds and fourth in the 100 back in 1:00.32. As a team, the Banana Slugs' best finish was fifth in the 400-yard freestyle relay (Meg Carrington, Lundgren, Paris Sinclair, and Izzy Blue,) with a time of 3:41.77, and the 800-yard freestyle (Sinclair, Emma Brown, Lundgren, and Kaylie Walker), which they finished in 8:10.46. Overall, UCSC finished fourth with 399 points.
The next event for the Banana Slugs will be December 6th-7th as they will host the Slug Invite in Santa Cruz.
