Banana Slugs swim hard at San Jose State

SAN JOSE (11-2) UC Santa Cruz Swimming and Diving continued their tour of top NorCal competition as they competed at San Jose Sate this weekend. The women swam against a pair of Division I teams, falling 183-91 to Pacific and 210-66 against the Spartans.

The men faced Pacific for the second time in a month in a dual, being outpointed 205-82.

Some of the standouts for the women were:

Izzy Blue finishing third in the 100 free in 54.44, 1.69 seconds better than her time at the Bay Area Invite two weeks ago. Aly Roberts was 4th in the 1000 Yard Freestyle in 11:15.26. In the 100 backstroke, Elisabeth Lundgren was 6th in 1:03.02., while Hannah Brazier took 2.2 seconds off her time at the Bay Area invite, finishing 7th in 1:06.29.

For the men, highlights included Matt Holt finishing second in the 1000 free in 10:15.34. Sam Smith continued to swim well in the 200 Free, finishing fourth in 1:47.48. Joe Guzman was fourth in the 100 Breast in 1:01.05, five seconds from the school record set in 2007.

Ethan Johnson, who has nominally already qualified for the NCAA Regionals, won the Men's 1-meter dive 293.15 to 248.20 over the Tigers' Mackaby Pennington.

The men's 200 medley relay of Akira Morita, Guzman, Victor Sowa and Max Manwaring Mueller was third in 1:39.52, .84 seconds better than their time at the Slug Shootout.

The Banana Slugs next compete in Los Angeles Nov. 21-22 at the Pepperdine Invitational.
