TOURNAMENT BOUND! Volleyball qualifies for NCAA Tournament

INDIANAPOLIS — UC Santa Cruz received an At-Large bid to the 2019 NCAA Division III Men's Volleyball Tournament as announced by the NCAA on Monday morning.

The Banana Slugs will travel to Kenosha Wisconsin to face Carthage College, who enter the tournament at 23-2. The winner of that match faces the winner of Fontbonne and Milwaukee School of Engineering for the right to advance to the Final Four in Union, NJ.

"This has been a fantastic season of never giving up. I'm beyond proud of our student-athletes," said head coach Paul Leon. "They've made countless sacrifices to reach this moment and they each deserve it."

It is the first NCAA Bid for UCSC since 2015. The Banana Slugs won their final six games of the regular season to earn the postseason bid.

"At the beginning of the season we knew that our goal was to be a part of the NCAA tournament," said co-captain Raymond Cascio. "Now that we have achieved that goal, we are setting our sights on capturing the championship."
Co-captain Kyle Donohoe said "at the start of season, the young guys on the team told us they wanted to earn this for the seniors, and now they've officially done that. We couldn't have done it without their dedication and hard work all season."
"It's an absolutely unreal feeling to know our hard work is paying off and super exciting that we get the chance to show who we have become since the beginning of this season," added Jonathan Santos
The two teams met in Kenosha on February 9th, with the Red Men edging UCSC 3-2.
"We are really excited to play Carthage because of how close that game was in February and how much better we have gotten since then," said Cascio. "We have faith in each other and we know that the journey to the championship won't be easy, but it's definitely attainable."
