CLAREMONT- The UC Santa Cruz men's tennis team began the 2019-20 season facing the best of the West at the Fall West Regional over the weekend.
The tournament had almost 100 players from the West Regions split over three different Singles brackets.
Freshman Andrew Tjoa was the only UCSC player in Flight A, where he lost to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps's Nic Meister 4-6, 1-6. Fellow freshman Reini Igna made the Flight B quarterfinals winning his first matches as a Slug over John Kim of Caltech 6-1, 7-6 and John Weiler of Pomona 4-6; 6-1; 1-0(3). He eventually fell in straight sets to another CMS player Ethan Carroll.
In Flight C, David Jackson and Lucas Chen met in the Quarters after each won two straight-set matches. Jackson prevailed in the all-UCSC encounter with a 6-1,6-2 win. In the semifinals, Jackson fell in a marathon to Seth Lipe 6-3, 2-6, 0-1 (7). Lipe had defeated Sarthak Saxena in the second round.
Kris Harris also made the C Flight Semifinals with wins over Charles Spina (CLU), Zachary Ambrosio (Whittier) and Joshua Blinder (Chapman). He fell to eventual champion Jake Berber of CMS 6-3 6-3. Earlier, Berber beat Slugs Matt Kermin in round one and Andre Mardirossian in the quarterfinals.
The new duo of Chen and Tjoa made the finals of the doubles consolation with two close wins: 8-7(6) over Occidental's Luke Williams and David Zhang and 8-6 over Sam Hum and Noah Forman of Colorado College.They fell in the finals to CMS duo Ian Habbestad and Jake Williams 8-7(4), who earlier had beaten Gee-Jackson 8-7(5).
The Banana Slugs will next host a Tournament with the UCSC Alumni on October 19.
