CLAREMONT (9-30) - Chad Le Duff began his senior campaign with a title.
Le Duff won the Intercollegiate Tennis Association West Regional title on Sunday and becomes the 125th player in program history to attain All-American status, in addition to being named All-America last year.
"Thanks to my amazing teammates, coaches and family," said Le Duff afterwards. "Two time! Let's get it!"
Le Duff faced last season's NCAA runner-up Jack Katzman of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps twice on Sunday. The two played three epic encounters last season and wasted no time getting re-acquainted.
Le Duff won the singles finals 6-1, 6-4, while he and Ryan Dugan lost the Doubles semis to Katzman and Julian Gordy 8-3.
"LeDuff and I are really happy for how far we got considering we only played with each other one other time before this tournament," Dugan said afterwards.
The duo advanced by defeating teams from Occidental, Whittier and Pomona-Pitzer respectively.
Le Duff and Dugan started the singles action on Friday. Dugan went 1-1, upsetting Quinn Hirsohn of Pomona-Pitzer 6-4,6-4 before falling to Claremont's Avinash Vemuri 6-4,6-1. Le Duff, seeded third, did not drop a set in wins over Whittier's Pim Van Der Veer, and Claremont's Casey Morris and Robert Liu. Saturday he beat Pomona's Jed Kronenberg, ITA Rookie of the Year and NCAA Singles quarterfinalist last season, 6-4, 6-4 to set up the meeting with Katzman.
"Full credit to Le Duff - he just got better with each match," said interim coach Amy Jensen. "Great for Chad & men's tennis to start the year with All-American status!"
Le Duff now advances to the ITA Nationals, scheduled for October 10-14 in Rome, Georgia.
