Santa Cruz, CA- UC Santa Cruz stopped the scoring efforts of University of Redlands, early and often, but the one goal they allowed was all the Bulldogs needed to slide past the Slugs. The Slugs lost 0-1 to Redlands (6-4-2) and are now 5-6-2 on the season, heading into their final weeks of the regular seasonbefore the ACAA tournament.
The game was clearly physical and rough from the beginning, with 3 fouls called almost instantaneously after the 8 minute mark, which would later add up to 20 total for both teams in the game.
Redlands took 6 shots in the first half, their first two stopped by Andrew Pimentel. UCSC matched the offensive competition taking three shots during the first half, one each by James Allison and Christian Locatelli along with Ben Blackfield's shot on goal. The scoreless first half, however, did not affect the high level of intensity displayed by either team in the second.
At the 47:02 mark, Redlands got another opportunity for a goal, but Pimentel stepped up. Liam Linas took a shot on goal from the right for UCSC at 51:44, yet the ball was saved before going through the net. The Bulldogs finally put up a goal on the scoreboard at 59:56 on a header. The Slugs battled back, as Locatelli and Will Barba each were able to get a shot off, but were unable to score before the clock ran out
Andrew Pimentel, with 5 saves today, surpassed 150 career saves at UCSC.
The Slugs' 2019 season will continue with a road trip to SoCal this weekend, kicking off against the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens on Saturday at 4pm, and playing again Sunday at 4pm against the La Verne Leopards.
