Ethan Kingery's first career goal ended up being the winning score as UC Santa Cruz beat Cal State East Bay 2-1 on a beautiful Tuesday afternoon.
UCSC improved to 5-5-1 and broke a three-game losing streak to Division II schools. Cal State East Bay went to 2-8.
UCSC struck first as Kailas Dhond scored his second goal of the season in the 14th minute. UCSC controlled the flow the rest of the half but couldn't add another goal, and ended up with an 8-2 shot advantage in the first half.
East Bay struck back to tie it 2:11 into the second half when Pioneer sub Tommy Flora headed home Kenji Nystrom's free kick. The game went back and forth as both teams sprinted for the eventual winning goal.
The Banana Slugs eventually broke the deadlock in the 71st minute, when James Allison took a short pass from Gabriel Palomares' corner kick and found Kingery at the right post for the eventual winning goal.
East Bay had the last good chance to tie it with 4 minutes left, but Michael Francisco sent his eight-yard shot high and UCSC controlled possession to see out the win.
UC Santa Cruz finished with a 19-7 shot advantage, and 13-3 shots on goals.
The Banana Slugs return to Division III competition for the next five games, starting with a huge game at Occidental this Saturday.
