Banana Slugs fall to Otters in nine-goal thriller

SEASIDE, CA - UC Santa Cruz played Division II neighbor Cal State Monterey Bay under the lights, but couldn't withstand a 22-11 shot discrepancy in a 7-2 loss.

UC Santa Cruz went to 3-3-1. CSUMB goes to 5-0. The two schools 39 miles apart have met several times in pre-season the past few years, but it the first regular season meeting between them since 2002.

CSUMB scored three goals in the first half before UCSC answered with 1:47 until halftime, when Ronaldo Nava got a head on a pass that went over the goalkeeper and into the net. It was the sophomore's first goal of the year and gave UCSC hope being down just 3-1 at the break.

In the second half, the Banana Slugs chased the game and started to make sustained attempts at the CSUMB goal. The Otters were able to answer on the counter and grab two more goals. UCSC then answered with one on their own, as Ethan Kingery's pass sprung Ben Blackfield on a 1-on-1  that he converted to make it 5-2. However, the Otters answered less than a minute later to restore their four-goal lead. Four different Otters scored, including a hat-trick by Pedro Hernandez.

Starting goalkeeper Andrew Pimentel had 3 saves and Gerry Delorie had 5 saves in relief.

The Banana Slugs play another CCAA opponent on Sunday when they face San Francisco State at the Lower East Field at 2:00 PM.
