HAYWARD (9-28) – The Banana Slugs continued their season-long eight match road trip as they took on NCAA Division II CSU East Bay in Hayward. The Banana Slugs scored two goals in each half to defeat the Pioneers 4-3.
The win extended the Banana Slugs (3-6) winning streak to two and broke a two-game losing streak to the Pioneers.
In the first half, the Pioneers would strike first. Carter Magee would score off a Marco Campos pass with 36:47 left in the half to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead. Just over one minute of clock time later, Ari Statler scored for the Banana Slugs tying the match at 1-1. With 19:28 left in the half, the Banana Slugs would take the lead at 2-1 on a Statler goal off a Lukas Holocher pass. The Banana Slugs led 2-1 at halftime.
In the second half, the Pioneers would be the first to score. Jonathan Ayala scored off a Michael Francisco pass to tie the match at 2-2 with 38:12 left. With 28:36 left, the Banana Slugs would take the lead again, at 3-2, on a Dominque Royall goal after passes from Jacob Myers Norys and Bryan Rodas. The Pioneers would tie the match again at 3-3 with 18:07 left, on Ayala's second goal of the match off of Francisco's second assist of the match. The Banana Slugs would take the lead for good with 14:47 left in the match on Statler's third goal of the match. The goal was assisted by Myers Norys who recorded his second assist of the match.
Statler had a match-high three shots to lead the Banana Slugs. Gerald Delorie got the win for the Banana Slugs and Omar Coronel got the loss for the Pioneers. CSU East Bay had one more shot (12-11) than did UC Santa Cruz while the Banana Slugs had two more corner kicks (4-2) than did the Pioneers.
The Banana Slugs will return to the pitch on Tuesday at 4:30 pm as they take on NAIA member CSU Maritime Academy in Vallejo.
