SANTA CRUZ (11-10) –The Banana Slugs rounded out a weekend homestand as they took on California Institute of Technology at West Field House. The game featured twenty-two lead changes and fourteen ties as the Beavers won 71-68. in a double overtime classic.
In the first half, neither team led more than three points for the entire half. The Beavers ended up leading 27-25 at halftime. In the second half, the back and forth trend continued. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the half at 33-30 on a Vinay Narayanam three pointer with 14:46 left. The Beavers would go on a 21-10 run, capped by a Spencer Schneider free throw with 3:25 left, to give the Beavers their largest lead of the ballgame at 51-43. From that point, the Banana Slugs went on a 10-2 regulation-ending run, capped by a pair of Avri Finch free throws, to tie the game at 53-53 with five seconds left. Marcus Gee's missed a potential game-winning three and the game went into overtime.
In the first overtime, the Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the ballgame at 57-53 after a pair of Finch free throws with 2:59 left. After Finch hit another free throw to give the Banana Slugs a 60-57 lead, Gee hit a three-pointer with two seconds left to send the game into double overtime. In double overtime, the two teams would trade baskets for the first three minutes of the period. The Beavers would gain the lead for good at 68-66, on a Stephen Hei three pointer with 2:05 left.
The Banana Slugs shot 38.6% (22-57) from the field, 12.5% (2-16) from the three-point line and were 75.9% (22-29) from the free throw line. The Beavers shot 42.9% (24-56) from the field, 34.6% (9-26) from the three-point line and were 82.4% (14-17) from the free throw line. UC Santa Cruz's defense scored 13 points off 17 turnovers by the Beavers. Caltech forced 16 turnovers by UC Santa Cruz, scoring 17 points off the turnovers. UC Santa Cruz outrebounded Caltech 39-36, while the Beavers had 14 more points off the bench (19-5) than did the Banana Slugs.
The next game for the Banana Slugs will be November 27th as they take on University of Redlands at Kaiser Permanente Arena. Tipoff is set for 7 pm.
