Gabbard hits 1,000 point mark in loss at Linfield

McMINNVILLE, ORE. - Sam Gabbard scored 16 points to lead UC Santa Cruz in a 93-68 loss to Linfield on Friday afternoon.

Gabbard became the tenth Banana Slug hit the 1,000 point plateau in his career, hitting the mark on an 'and-1' with 3:50 left in the first, and now stands at 1,010 in his career, passing Julius Patterson for 9th place in school history.

Will Crain and Russell Taylor each had 11 points for UCSC, who fell to 6-8. Simon Mueller-Landsvik added 10 points with a team-high 4 assists.

UCSC scored the first basket and it remained a two possession game most of the first half. After Gabbard made two free-throws to get UCSC within 38-33 with 1:55 left until halftime, but Linfield finished the half with a 6-0 run to make it an 11-point lead at halftime.

After a Mueller-Landsvik steal and pair of free-throws got UCSC to within 50-44 with 14:25 left, Linfield (7-2) went on a 13-4 run that made it 63-48 with 11:14 left and kept the lead in double figures the rest of the game.

Will Burghardt led five Wildcats in double figures with 19 points. Linfield, 13th nationally in shooting percentage, hit 59% from the field (35-59) in the game and was 44% (11-25) on three-pointers.

UCSC continues their December roadtrip with a pair of games next weekend in southern California, starting with a visit to Occidental on Friday the 28th.
