PASADENA- Host Caltech went on a 14-36 shooting spree from three, and needed every one of those treys to outlast UC Santa Cruz 66-63 on Saturday afternoon.
The Banana Slugs fell to 5-5 on the season while the Beavers went to 3-2.
UCSC opened with a 19-11 lead in the first nine and a half minutes. The Beavers however started hitting their outside shots and roared back with a 24-7 run to take the lead they wouldn't give up the rest of the game.
The Banana Slugs fought to the end and never let their hosts feel comfortable. Trailing 40-35 to start the second half, UCSC got within one point on four occasions but couldn't get the lead back.
Sam Gabbard had a last-second three knocked away before the Beavers could breathe and claim the win.
Gabbard led UCSC with 18 points and nine rebounds playing all 40 minutes. He passed Derek Jones for 12th on the school's career scoring chart. Will Crain added 15 points and 7 rebounds with team-highs of 4 assists and 5 blocks. Russell Taylor added 11 points.
Marcus Gee led Caltech with 21 points, including 5-9 from three. Spencer Schneider added 16.
UCSC continues their roadtrip with a game at Pomona-Pitzer tomorrow at 1pm.
