OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Senior men's forward Sam Gabbard and women's guard/forward Ashley Kowack were awarded the Association of Division III Independents basketball Players of the Week.
Gabbard won his second-straight Player of the Week honor. He averaged 22.5 points, 13.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game, earning MVP honors at the UC Santa Cruz Thanksgiving Classic as the Banana Slugs went 2-0. He opened the week with 24 points and 17 rebounds on 8-of-13 shooting in a comeback win over La Verne on Saturday and followed that up with 21 points and ten rebounds on 7-of-14 shooting against Colby on Sunday.
Gabbard ranks in the top 50 nationally in both scoring and rebounds and is 11th in double-doubles.
Kowack was also named MVP of the Thanksgiving Classic after averaging 25.0 points and 1.5 blocks per game in a 2-0 week for the Banana Slugs. The San Diego native started the week with 23 points and five rebounds in a win over West Region rival Lewis & Clark on Saturday. She concluded the week with 27 points on 10-of-19 shooting with two blocks in UC Santa Cruz's 65-60 win over Carleton on Sunday. Kowack ranks 21st nationally in scoring and is 14th nationally with 3.8 treys/game.
