SANTA CRUZ - Four Banana Slugs players hit double-figures as UC Santa Cruz held off Colby College 80-77 in the final of the Thanksgiving Classic.
Sam Gabbard was top scorer with 21 points and 10 rebounds as UCSC won its second-straight game to go to 3-2.
Freshman Simon Mueller-Landsvik scored a season-high 13 points. Will Crain had 11 points and Patrick Ramos had 10. UCSC outrebounded the Mules 44-35. Gabbard's 10 boards put him in 3rd place in the UCSC career charts with 526, passing former teammate Tre Weston.
The game had seven ties and eight lead changes. UCSC never trailed in the second half, but couldn't shake the resillient Mules. The Slugs went on a 10-5 run midway through the second half that gave them their biggest lead at 73-65 with 4:24 remaining. However, Colby climbed back to within one with a 7-0 run. Free-throws down the stretch by Ben Dorfman and Russell Taylor kept the lead at three, and UCSC finally was able to breathe when Colby's Matt Hanna missed a potential tying three-pointer at the buzzer.
Hanna led all scorers with 29 points to lead the Mules (4-1).
UCSC begins a month-long road trip Saturday December 1st at Colorado College.
