SANTA CRUZ (11-10) – The Banana Slugs started their 2018-19 season as they took on University of Redlands at Kaiser Permanente Arena. The Bulldogs topped the Banana Slugs 58-47.
In the first half, the Bulldogs started the game outscoring the Banana Slugs 7-4. The Banana Slugs would then go on a 12-4 run, capped by a Sam Gabbard free throw, to give the Banana Slugs their largest lead of the ballgame at five at 16-11. The Bulldogs would respond with an 8-2 run of their own, capped by a Joey Sponheim free throw, to give the Bulldogs the lead for good at 19-18 with 5:49 left in the half. The Bulldogs would gain their largest lead of the half at five on three occasions; the third occasion at 27-22 at the halftime break.
In the second half, the Bulldogs would hold the Banana Slugs at arm's length and lead by as much as thirteen, at 39-26, on a Sponheim three pointer with 14:18 left. The Banana Slugs would come as close as seven at 52-45 on a Tyler Klingenbeck free throw with 4:04 left.
Gabbard had nine points to lead the Banana Slugs. Klingenbeck and Simon Mueller-Landsvik had seven points apiece in the loss. Sponheim had a game high eighteen points for the Bulldogs. David Menary had fourteen and his brother Gary Menary had eight points.
The Banana Slugs shot 37.8% (17-45) from the field, 20% (4-20) from the three-point line and were 40.9% (9-22) from the free throw line. The Bulldogs shot 44.9% (22-49) from the field, 12.5% (1-8) from the three-point line and 65% (13-20) from the foul line. UC Santa Cruz's defense forced fourteen turnovers, scoring nine points off the turnovers while the Bulldogs' defense forced twenty-one turnovers by UC Santa Cruz scoring nineteen points off the turnovers. UC Santa Cruz outrebounded University of Redlands 36-30.
The next game for the Banana Slugs will be on Friday November 16 as they take on California Lutheran University at West Field House at 5 pm.
