Banana Slugs Pluck RedHawks

REDDING (1-17) – The Banana Slugs finished up their eleven game road trip as they took on NAIA member Simpson University in Redding. The Banana Slugs won 81-76 for their third consecutive win.

In their last game, the Banana Slugs won 103-69 over NCCAA member West Coast Baptist College in Lancaster on Saturday while the RedHawks lost 85-75 to University of Antelope Valley in Redding on Saturday.

In the first half, the Banana Slugs started the game on a 12-6 run capped by a Tre Weston jumper with 16:10 left in the half. After Ben Dorfman gave the Banana Slugs a four point lead at 18-14, the RedHawks went on a 7-0 run, capped by a Josh Brakkee jumper, to give the RedHawks their largest lead of the game at three at 21-18. The Banana Slugs would then go on a 8-0 run, capped by a Weston jumper, with 6:30 left in the half. The Banana Slugs would gain their largest lead of the half at nine on two occasions; the second occasion at 36-27 on an Adam Marlow jumper with 1:48 left in the half. The Banana Slugs led 36-31 at halftime. 

In the second half, the Banana Slugs held the RedHawks at arms' length. The Banana Slugs gained a double digit lead at 51-40 on a Weston jumper with 15:02 left. The Banana Slugs gained their largest lead of the ballgame at nineteen, at 74-55, on a Sam Gabbard jumper with 6:39 left. The RedHawks would then go on a 19-4 run, capped by an Aaron Berry jumper with 1:21 left, to trim the Banana Slugs lead to 77-74.

Weston had a game high twenty four points to lead the Banana Slugs. Anthony Spencer had eighteen points for the RedHawks. Gabbard had sixteen points and Andrew Jones had fifteen points in the win. Berry had seventeen, Brakkee had sixteen and Jalen DuPree had fourteen points for the RedHawks.

The Banana Slugs shot 45.6% (31-68) from the field, 47.8% (11-23) from the three-point line and were 53.3% (8-15) from the free throw line. The RedHawks shot 42% (29-69) from the field, 10% (1-10) from the three-point line and 85% (17-20) from the foul line. UC Santa Cruz's defense forced ten turnovers by the RedHawks scoring seven points off the turnovers while the RedHawks' defense forced thirteen turnovers by UC Santa Cruz scoring eighteen points off the turnovers. UC Santa Cruz outrebounded Simpson 46-39 and the Banana Slugs had fourteen more points off the bench (17-3) than did the RedHawks.

The next game for the Banana Slugs will be Wednesday as they take on NCCAA opponent Bethesda University of California at Kaiser Permanente Arena. Tipoff is set for 7 pm.
