Cold Shooting Dooms Banana Slugs in Loss

SANTA CRUZ (11-20) – UC Santa Cruz played their second game in a row at home as they took on NCAA Division III opponent University of Redlands at Kaiser Permanente Arena. The Banana Slugs shot 38% for the game from the field as the Bulldogs won 67-58.

UC Santa Cruz was coming off a 69-55 loss to Claremont Mudd Scripps on Sunday in Santa Cruz. University of Redlands was playing their first game of the 2015-2016 season after finishing the 2014-2015 season with a 7-18 record.

The Bulldogs would lead wire-to-wire in this contest. The Bulldogs would start the game on a 9-2 run capped by an Al Bjekovic three pointer with 18:12 left in the half. The Banana Slugs would come as close as four, at 9-5, on an Adam Marlow three pointer with 17:42 left in the half. The Bulldogs would expand their lead to double digits, at 15-5, on a Bjekovic layup with 15:08 left in the half. The Bulldogs would gain their largest lead of the ballgame at nineteen, at 29-10, on a Wyatt Pannabecker free throw with 8:59 left in the half. The Banana Slugs would go on an 18-5 run, capped by a Dylan Holler three pointer, to make the score 33-28 with 1:41 left. The Bulldogs would lead 38-29 at halftime.   

In the second half, the Bulldogs would hold the Banana Slugs at arm's length. The closest that the Banana Slugs would come would be nine on two different occasions; the second occasion coming with seventeen seconds remaining, at 67-59, on a Marlow three pointer. The Bulldogs won 67-59.

Holler, off the bench, had nineteen points for the Banana Slugs. Bjekovic had a game high twenty one points for the Bulldogs. Marlow had thirteen points in the loss. Sean Milligan had seventeen points for the Bulldogs.

The Banana Slugs shot 38% (19-50) from the field, 45.5% (10-22) from the three point line and was 52.6% (10-19) from the free throw line. The Bulldogs shot 42.6% (26-61) from the field, 34.8% (8-23) from the three point line and 53.8% (7-13) from the foul line. UC Santa Cruz's defense forced twelve Bulldog turnovers scoring seven points off the turnovers while the Bulldogs' defense forced sixteen turnovers by UC Santa Cruz scoring seventeen points off the turnovers. Redlands outrebounded UC Santa Cruz 39-35 but the Banana Slugs had twenty more bench points (33-13) than did the Bulldogs.

The Banana Slugs have a little more than twenty four hours before their next game. The next game for the Banana Slugs will be Saturday as they take on Pacific University at Kaiser Permanente Arena. Tip off is set for 5 pm.
